We’re going over the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez products in a first review impressions formate because when Rare Beauty launched, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t drawn in and I hadn’t seen any reviews on it yet. The packaging was nice, the colours were pretty, but I didn’t see anything that made Rare Beauty stand out. I had perfectly good products at home, I didn’t need to try this one. Plus, let’s be honest, not every celebrity makeup brand launch goes as planned the first time around.
Let me tell you, honestly. There are so many reasons why my first thought was wrong.

What are the values behind Rare Beauty
After I decided to look into the Rare Beauty products, it became very apparent that the first priority of this company was not to make money, it was to do good with good products. While the Rare Beauty products themselves are incredible (more on that farther down) the values behind the brand are even better. Let me give you a quick rundown:
- Their main goal is to support the mental health community by starting the Rare Impact Fund
- They are aiming to raise $100 million over the next 10 years to help fill any gaps in mental health services and groups
- Product packaging was designed to be inclusive to those with mobility issues
- Shade ranges are fully inclusive and promote natural beauty, imperfections and all
Once I learned about the brands values and goals, I was instantly drawn in. I knew I had to try them, if not to support a brand that truly seems to have the consumers best interest in mind.

How to prep your skin for Rare Beauty products
My skin type is a combination of oily and dry. It is typically oily, but gets dry when the seasons change or due to hormones. When I first applied the Rare Beauty products my skin was hormonally dry, but still oily in my T zone.
I made sure to prep my skin with moisturizer right before application. I used a priming water spray (linked here), a mattifying primer (linked here), and a pore filling primer (linked here). All three of these are my regular primer so I knew they worked.
How does Rare Beauty Apply
The products are design to be light weight and natural looking. I can attest to both these claims that they definitely live up to this! When applying the products, no matter how much you put on, each layer feels weightless.
Before and after foundation
The foundation applied like a serum with a medium coverage finish, which I was able to build up with another light layer. After the initial application, the colour oxidized very slightly, but not to the point that anyone would notice. It covered up my acne and redness seamlessly but still looked like skin. The foundation shade I chose was 270N, which I selected using the Sephora Shade Finder. This colour was perfect for me in my summer colour or my fake tan colour. The concealer shade I went with was 210N and also a perfect shade. It is slightly lighter than the foundation so it gives a great natural brightening effect when applied.
Before and after concealer
The liquid highlight goes on intensely but blends out to a very subtle glow to the skin. It reminds me of the same look your skin gets when you’ve been drinking enough water with a great hydrating skincare routine in place. A very natural, glow from within type of look, which matches perfectly with this line of products. I selected the shade Enlighten and it is perfect for light to medium skin tones looking for a natural glow to the skin.
The blush is incredible. It has a very, VERY, strong pigment to it, so one dot is more than enough. Start small and blend out as needed. It blends beautifully and easily, but takes some time to work it in if too much is applied. I went with the dewy finish in shade Joy and it is the perfect every day colour.
Before and after blush and highlighter
I apply this foundation with a flat top foundation brush, as it was the best way to maintain the coverage and still give the finish a natural look on the skin. I went in with a damp beauty sponge for the concealer and it blended seamlessly into the foundation with ease. The liquid highlighter was applied with a small powder brush for the best application. The blush was applied with a dense angled flat top brush, as the product is so heavily pigmented I found the duo fiber brush I started with wasn’t enough to really buff the colour into the skin.
The last product I picked to try was the eyebrow pencil. As someone who has very sparse eyebrows, the Rare Beauty Brow Harmony Pencil & Gel was something that I had a lot of hope for. I’m always on the hunt for a great eyebrow routine to help achieve a naturally fluffy look to my brows. The Brow Harmony Pencil & Gel applied like a dream. The gel wand is perfect in size, the colour is great, and the pencil was creamy and smooth to use. I went with the colour Cool Brown and it was a perfect match.
First check-in immediately after application
I was very impressed with the look of the makeup after application. I set my face with a little bit of Maybelline Fit Me powder and added some Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel cream bronzer to finish off the look. My skin looked airbrushed and flawless after application. It was virtually undetectable that I had any make up on, but you could tell I was wearing something because my face look lively and bright. As someone who enjoys a full face of makeup, I didn’t feel like I looked like I was wearing any less but it definitely didn’t feel like a lot of makeup. It was the perfect blend of full face of makeup in a natural look.
Before and after full face of makeup
4 Hour Check In
The 4-hour check-in was great. The makeup had melted into the skin even more and looked beautiful on the skin. It was not oily or dry feeling. In fact, it felt undetectable still on the skin! At this point, I was still very happy with the products. During this time I had been wearing a face mask as well, and you’ll see there is almost no disruption to the makeup on my face. There was a transfer in my mask, but that was too be expected.
Immediately after application and 4 hours after application
8 Hours Check In
This is where things started to go downhill. I have definitely had worse looks by this time of day but I was very shiny and oil at the 8-hour mark. I will say, the products, while starting to fade, were still holding onto quite a bit of pigment and it was still a very even coverage, aside from my nose where it had completely rubbed off. With some blotting and a powder touch up, you’d be able to get another couple hours of wear into this.

Final Verdict On First Impression From Full Day Wear Test
Wrapping up this first impressions review of the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez makeup line, I am really impressed. While it may not have been as longwearing as some of my other foundations, the products themselves were the most comfortable products I’ve ever used. I know with the right combination of primers, this could last longer on my oily skin. I haven’t felt so excited to wake up and put on my makeup in a very long time! If you get the chance to try out this line of products, I highly recommend you do. They seem to be suitable for all skin types and there inclusive shades and packaging designs are fantastic.
