One of my favourite seasons is Fall. There is something about the crisp mornings and warm days that are, confusing, yes, but also so comfortable. I’m a sucker for a good, cozy sweater (along with every other girl) and while I’m not a fan of pumpkin, anything spiced and apple you can send my way!
While we’d all love to be able to buy huge amounts of clothes each season to stock our wardrobe, it’s not usually possible, especially with babies who need food on the table! Instead, I’ve pick out staple pieces you should have in your wardrobe this fall season to be on trend and not break the bank.

A classic tshirt is an item that I bet almost everyone has in their closet. And if you don’t have one in yours, I bet hubby has one that will work just as well that you can snag for your outfit! It probably goes without saying, but the classic tshirt goes with literally every. Single. Outfit. Wear it oversized and it can be a stand alone piece or a more fitted style works great as a layering piece. I like to keep a a few in grey, white, and black, because those will cover any outfit I’d want to wear them with, without feeling overdone.
Plaid Button Down
If you were to open my closet, you’d think I was a lumberjack with all the plaid shirts I have. They are probably one of my favourite clothing pieces to own for the fall because like the classic tshirt, they can go with almost every outfit. Some of my favourite ways to wear them are layered on top of a tank top or basic tshirt with a puffer vest thrown on top or paired with black leggings, a basic long sleeved shirt and the plaid tied around my waist (this one is especially good for days you’re feeling a little bloated and you want to accentuate your waistline a little more).
Really you could choose any colour of jean, but my reasoning with medium wash is it’s dark enough to feel acceptable to wear during fall and winter but it’s not so dark that you can’t style a light and bright feeling outfit. This could 100% be a crazy “only makes sense in Elyse’s head” theory (I can’t be the only one who has these, right?) but it’s the perfect middle ground coloured jean that if you could only pick one, would work with absolutely every outfit and clothing piece.
Okay, this is not necessarily a clothing piece as much as it is an accessory, but it’s a staple that I could not live without. For all the days your children kept you up all night, for all the nights you stayed up waaay too late watching netflix trying to soak up every second of alone time, for all the extra glasses of wine you probably could have done without, sunglasses will be your best friend.
Dark cirlces? Cover ’em with sunglasses. Haven’t washed your hair in over a week? Messy bun and sunglasses. Child is throwing a tantrum in the middle of the grocery store? Sunglasses. Literally, anytime, sunglasses. You will thank me later.
Black Puffer Vest
If you’re looking for a fashion piece that makes any outfit feel like fall, look no further! I am in love with my black puffer vest. I throw it on top of everything, almost daily. It’s great to keep warm without feeling bulky, but it’s also a really great layering piece that can go with jeans, leggings, sweatpants, basic or fancy tops, and virtually any shoes. I love to wear mine over a plaid shirt or an oversized comfy sweater to give my outfit a little more shape (weird, I know, but trust me, it does).
My love of fall may make me the most basic of girls but I don’t even care! I’m ready for the apple cider, warm cozy nights, and sweater weather all day round.
