I don’t know what it was this year, but this winter has felt particularly long, amirite?! And because of that the winter blues hit me hard this year! With the mix of crazy amounts of snow, freezing cold weather, and gloomy days I felt even more stuck inside the house than usual. It was easy to get into a rut with all of that going on so I decided it was time for a change!
Where is the one place in your house that you see first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed? Your bedroom. And if your bedroom doesn’t bring you joy, well, then it’s time for a change. We completely updated our bedroom as an easy way to beat the winter blues. It is crazy how much of a mood booster adding some new colours and pieces into your space can be!
Thank you SO much to Wayfair Canada for sponsoring this post! I have decorated our apartment with Wayfair furniture since we moved in so I am thrilled to be working with them on this.
If you want to see how we took our bedroom from boring and sad to the place we want to spend all our time in now, read on, friend!
I am a little embarrassed to be posting these before pictures because they really showcase how little we cared about this space before the update. But I am always going to keep it real so I didn’t tidy or do anything before these pictures. It was messy, disorganized, and clearly never had any attention put into it. It was no wonder we woke up feeling down when our space was so blah. It is hard to have a clear and happy mind when your environment is cluttered and sad!
We had mismatched bed sheets, laundry baskets over flowing everywhere, Christmas boxes which still needed to be empties, and yes… those are filing cabinets being used for night stands. Oh, and our box spring was completely broken because I stepped on it before we moved into this place and put my foot through it, multiple times.
The difference just adding some colour and reorganizing makes is incredible. We kept almost all the same furniture, we just put up some blinds, changed the bedding, and added in some new smaller pieces to bring the room together. We also threw out the broken box spring so our bed looks like a new bed! It has made the gloomy weather feel not so bad now that we have updated our space! (not to mention, Tanner loves the new stuff almost more then we do)
For our bedding, I wanted to pick colours that stood out, but weren’t obnoxious, so I went with a navy blue Duvet cover and pillow shams with white bed sheet and fitted sheet. These are from the Wayfair basics collection and we love them. We’ve been sleeping on them for about two weeks now and they’re soft, breathable, and super comfortable!
For our throw pillow, I wanted something that was different than just a basic pillow. I opted for a gold and white one because it goes with so many other colours and in the future we can accent the room with more gold pieces.
As crazy as this may be, since moving in January 2018, we have never had lights, curtains or proper nightstands in our bedroom. We just hadn’t gotten around to it. When I saw these table lamps on Wayfair, my heart jumped a bit (like I always say, I’m dramatic). They’re beautiful, the perfect size, just the right amount of light, and Bryn likes them as well, so they pass the hubby test!
The curtains are beautiful and perfect for the room. The bedroom gets a ton of light and I enjoy waking up to the sunshine instead of a dark room so the sheer curtains were great. They frame the room really nicely while still keeping it bright and airy.
We took our coffee table, which once lived in our living room like most coffee tables do, and put it at the end of our bed when R started crawling and moving around more and honestly, I really like it. It’s got some great storage underneath it and it matches the wood floors perfectly. I like that we can decorate the top of it to give the room an even cozier feel. I think one of my favourite design tricks is to take what you already own, and rearrange or move it to a different room to give your space a fresh feel. I find myself doing this all around our apartment every couple months when I get bored of the layout.
The bedroom now feels like such a great space to be in. It looks like a completely different room, even though we only added in six new things! You could totally redo your own bedroom space for even less than that. Simple colour changes can make such a big difference in the feel of your space.
Our next step with the room will be to add some pictures to the walls and some more greenery.
If you are feeling the winters blues after being stuck inside all winter, check out Wayfair Canada to start upgrading your bedroom! I am always super impressed with the delivery speed and the customer service is incredible. Somehow, Bryn’s name ended up on some of the orders so I sent a quick email to customer service and they called me within a half hour to have everything changed.
Fingers crossed we have some warmer weather coming our way, but until then, I’ll be enjoying our new, bright bedroom and dreaming of summer days!
