Practicing Self Care: Taking Care of Yourself, So You Can Take Care of Others

How many of us can honestly say that we practice self care ever week?

Probably not enough of us.

Raising a family is so incredibly taxing on our bodies and time, and we often forget to slow down and take care of ourselves. You’re most likely running around after children, carrying babies, drinking cold coffee, with hair that’s been in the same bun for the last 4 days.

Sound familiar?

Let me stop you right here and tell you the most important thing I’ve learned about motherhood to this date.

A burnt out mother does not help herself, or her family.

For the benefit of you and your family, you need to take the time to look after yourself.

I’m not saying you need to book off an entire day to go the spa once a week. You can if you’d like! But that is not always realistic. Instead, here are some things that you will only need 5 minutes a day to help you unwind and feel your best.

Stretch it out, Mama!

Simple right?

As moms, we spend most of our days running around and carrying children, which does a number on our posture and muscles.

Take 5 minutes at day, whenever you get the time, and stretch out your body. Focus on your neck, shoulders, chest, and back. I promise you will feel so much better after a week of doing this!

Take a bath

I love myself a good bath! I’ve talked about this in so many posts already (like this one, and this one) but I could not live without my Lush bath bombs and bubble bars. These are the little things that I invest in because, yes they can get pricey, but oh my are they worth it! When the baby goes to bed I will run a bath with one of my lush products, pour myself a glass of wine, and soak in the bath while watching netflix until I’m as wrinkled as a prune.

Sounds pretty nice, right?!

This doesn’t have to be a once a day thing, or even a once a week, but a couple times a month, slow everything down and just basque in the silence. 

Girl, Brush Your Hair

I know, it’s the easiest thing to forget, but remember those times (which probably feels like years ago) when you took a couple minutes and did your hair? How good did it feel?! I swear, doing your hair makes you feel like a whole new person.

You don’t have to spend hours on it, but at least give yourself the luxury of redoing your mom bun! It’s the little wins in life that make you feel great.

Get Out Of The House

Ever notice you start to go a little crazy after being in the house for too long?

We want to avoid that.

Pack up the family or go by yourself, but try and get out of the house a couple times a week. Go for a walk, out to a mall and window shop, or even to another mom’s house! It doesn’t matter where you go, it’s the fact that you left your house that matters.

I know mom life is busy. I’m right there with you! But I am challenging you to find 5-10 minutes a week where you can take care of you. Whether that be brushing your hair or stretching out your muscles, make the time to do something for yourself.

You work hard every. Single. Day taking care of  everyone else around you, so let me tell you (because I know you are waiting for someone to say it), you deserve to feel good. You deserve to look your best. 

You deserve time to take care of yourself.

So do it. 

You won’t regret it. I promise.
